Ray Underhill

We are sorry to report that Ray Underhill passed away on Friday, August 1.

Ray was born in Hendersonville, TN, and helped bring attention to skateboarding in Middle Tennessee. He was diagnosed with a chordoma brain tumor in late 2006, and had been going through treatments to fight the cancer. Ray was once a professional skater for Powell-Peralta, and then worked as a webmaster for Tony Hawk. He was a part of the Bones Brigade alongside Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, and Lance Mountain, among others.

Ray is a cousin to three of our committee board members, yet a friend of many. He will be missed by all. Please take some time today to visit his website, http://www.rayunderhill.com, and leave a message of support for his family and friends.

Helmets aren't just for bikers

"Parents are urged to require children of all ages to wear helmets and to remember that helmets aren't just for bicycle riders.

"Dee Downing is learning about helmet safety the hard way. Her 15-year-old daughter, Danielle, was treated at the [Vanderbilt] Children's Hospital Emergency Department on May 20 for two skull fractures after a fall from a skateboard. On Friday, June 20, 'Danny' will return for a hearing test to be certain she has suffered no permanent damage."

The best way to get to Thompson Park is to take Main Street into the square, then turn right onto S. Waters Ave. Turn left at the Kentucky Fried Chicken on Morrison Street. Follow that street down past the houses, and you will come to the park. The skatepark is on the left, behind the playground, where the old tennis courts used to be.
